"The Train Robbers"
Starring John Wayne
1973
This is one of the better John Wayne movies, because there is not
much to say about it. There are a bunch of shoot-outs of course.
The redeeming feature is the sinister role of the private security
guard, a Pinkerton for Wells Fargo. Right and wrong become mixed up
with money--not a bad message.
There is the usual macho stuff where the leader of many battles
tells his young comrade that he will not run from battle,
"because you are a man." At the time, with the way the economy worked,
as depicted in the movie, it may be realistic to think so, and
we won't comment further about this raid-or-be-raided life.
We also see some criticism of the macho role as comrades criticize
leadership styles that just bluster their way through. Indeed, John Wayne
plays a role where he admits being wrong.
