February 23rd is the birthday of W.E.B. Du Bois, the pioneering Pan-Africanist and communist. This year MIM celebrated his birthday in style by organizing more signatures for our statement regarding his birthday, reprinted on page 6 of this issue. We have reached 101 individuals and organizations signing the call to heed Du Bois's teachings pointing to possible material interests that white workers in the imperialist countries have to line up with the imperialists. RAIL- Finland and RAIL-England pushed us over the top. Du Bois told the world that the toilers of Eastern Europe were heavily exploited before the Bolshevik Revolution, but when he thought about white workers in the united $tates, Du Bois became one of the first to doubt these supposedly most "advanced" workers and the alleged multi-racial unity of a supposedly single "working-class." From such thoughts, Du Bois easily turned to nationalism, Pan-Africanism and great admiration for Stalin and especially Mao Zedong. Today, Du Bois's doubts about the white worker are more relevant than ever as the gap between rich and poor nations has expanded. We call on all communists to sign our declaration of support in connection to his name. We hope to have a longer list for his next birthday.
