On April 28 1997, 25 more Massachusetts prisoners were transfered to Texas. This followed the March 9 transfer of 140 prisoners, a repeat performance of the prison-budget building stunt November 1, 1995 when the first 299 men were sent there. The prisoners are being kept thousands of miles from their families and friends when contact with these people is one of the most important aspects of their prison life and the only thing that guarantees any accountability for livable conditions. In Texas prisons conditions are even worse than in Massachusetts. Prisoners fear for their lives as they endure serious health problems caused by unhygienic conditions and deprivation of medical care. And Even the undersecretary of public safety in Massachusetts admitted that sending inmates to Texas severs their family ties and this is a problem. We, the undersigned, demand their prompt return to Massachusetts.
