United Farmworkers

The majority of "workers" inside U.$. borders are exploiters, members of the petty-bourgeoisie. One category most likely to reflect the exception is farmworkers, especially migrant farmworkers of Aztlán. Even so, some farmworkers will not be exploited and the leadership of the union will be under constant pressure to serve the petty-bourgeoisie instead of the exploited.

The UFW is tied to the union of exploiters called the AFL-CIO. However, the UFW affects the conditions of workers with really exploited conditions. The real issue is one of undocumented labor and how to improve the conditions of workers that employers are trying to hide to some extent.

One area where we disagree with the UFW is the question of NAFTA, the trade treaty amongst the United $tates, Kanada and Mexico. It's wrong to oppose trade treaties as trade treaties in principle, but that's what the UFW does here, going so far as to write off entire countries in passing. Opposition to trade with other countries comes with hostile nationalism. That's why it is important to oppose imperialism and not trade itself. Trade itself can be a very good thing making all people better off, but only if organized scientifically for the benefit of the international proletariat. The AFL-CIO sidesteps these issues and only ends up stirring up fascist nationalism on the question.

Special credit goes to the UFW for coming out with a statement against pre-emptive war with Iraq.
