MIM asked scientific communists the world around about the urban petty-bourgeoisie and its conditions by country. Although MIM cannot really directly compare itself with parties leading peasants, the urban petty-bourgeoisie in many Third World countries is somewhat similar to the kind of people we see in the imperialist countries. If you can tell us about the urban petty-bourgeoisie in your country, and how you distinguish it from a proletariat, please write to MIM at mim3@mim.org with a description.
The urban petty bourgeoisie is the class comprising small lawyers, primary and high school teachers, small tradesmen, students, clerks and many many profession which fall under the same economical categorization. Pakistan is different like every other country. This is the country where we have got family system and norms of family prevail. This society of Pakistan is having much more absorbing capacity, when the threats of economic disparity is there. As similar to other societies we can divide this class into three subclasses, people with little better economy, who are not so much worried about there future. These people wanted to be rich and they are less afraid from the day to day events, so they are less revolutionary. Middle of this class are capricious, and lowest strata is always revolutionary and inclined towards revolutions. The lowest strata is always endangered from its future and prone to revoluton. But the problem in Pakistan is that common man did not know what to do.... There are no revolutionary organizations to guide them properly. The other heinous problems of the society is religious conservatism, which gives them backwardness and they cannot come out of the marsh. Unscientific attitude is another major problem. Common masses are robbed and they have no sense or desire for their progress. Many many psychological wars are launched against common masses. All political parties are the parties lead by robbers and CIA agents and pseudo-Democracy prevails. The income of the urban petty bourgeoisie is from 3000 rupees to 15000, Rupees per month, one dollar is 60 Pakistani rupees. Theirs assets are in the same way. A personal house or a rented house or a shop or a small piece of land. Conditions of life is distress, illiteracy, ignorance, unhygienic living, their families are in a constant state of scuffle. Hobbies are just empty gossips , with many many shades.--Chairman Communist Party of Pakistan (Stalinist-Maoist), April 2006
