This is an archive of the former website of the Maoist Internationalist Movement, which was run by the now defunct Maoist Internationalist Party - Amerika. The MIM now consists of many independent cells, many of which have their own indendendent organs both online and off. MIM(Prisons) serves these documents as a service to and reference for the anti-imperialist movement worldwide.
Dennis Brutus Headlines Night of Political Poetry
On April 16, the Friends Of the Revolutionary Anti-Imperialist League (FORAIL) hosted a night of political poetry at Boston University, featuring Dennis Brutus to benefit the Free Books for Prisoners program. The night began with Dennis Brutus, who read poetry and told stories about his activism in South Africa during apartheid and the time he spent on Robben Island as a political prisoner. Brutus brought smiles to the crowds face with stories from prison, including one about showers that consisted of running naked from your cell to a fire hose and back. Although he laughs at these stories now, he pointed out that they were not so fun at the time. This was reinforced by other stories of guards murdering inmates and the limited supplies that were available.
The event attracted a good crowd, all of whom seemed very involved in the struggle. Many of them read original poetry, while others read stuff written by others. RAIL activists read poems sent to us by local prisoners. The readers included another poet from south africa, a former political prisoner, students and other community members. Admission was charged and all profits went to benefit MIM's Free Books for Prisoners program. We also used this event to publicize our constant work writing to prisoners and providing them with educational resources.
