The Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) has replied to a MIM request for a FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) on its records regarding MIM since 1983. MIM requested the documents in November, 2006.
On February 21, 2007, the DIA sent MIM a letter saying:
"There is a substantial delay in processing requests, and it is impossible for us to forecast when your case will be completed. We solicit your patience and understanding and assure you that we will process your request as soon as possible."MIM actually does not like talking about the DIA, because the public watching movies only knows about the FBI, CIA and more likely the DEA instead of the DIA. Hence, MIM speaks of the "FBI" and "CIA" to capture the public imagination.
Nonetheless, DIA is its own agency in the federal government. A news documentary on the Bush administration says that Bush and Cheney sometimes try to go through the DIA to check on the work of other agencies. A full understanding of the federal relationship to MIM would require a portion from the DIA.
Another big piece of the picture missing from the public's imagination is the NSA. That is another secret spying agency that we journalists have a hard time explaining to the public in a way that captures the public's imagination--and sticks.
Some of the individuals persecuting MIM lately have ties to both the CIA and separate military intelligence agencies. In regard to many discussions about the relationship of imperialist spying to MIM and politics in general, fine distinctions of agency do not matter. Recently, we have also drawn distinctions between domestic and international matters; even though, the FBI also involves itself in issues of international politics.
MIM stresses overall the number of spies, the number of federal employees relative to the number of political activists. By itself, the FBI has more full-time employees than there are communists and social-democrats in the united $tates combined. With 28,576 employees as of 2004, the FBI also has 16,000 which are either wimmin or "minorities."(1)
A public source says the DIA has 7000 employees and is looking to add 1000 this year. By itself, the DIA probably has more people than the united $tates has people calling themselves "communist." In addition, the DIA people with their own self-interests spend full-time on their jobs, while most communists are not full-time communists.
MIM has received no reply at all to its request for Pentagon records on faculty contracts at the University of Colorado, Boulder and the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
