Tito was not Serbian but he led an armed struggle against Nazism that gained Yugoslavia (where Serbians lived until dissolving in 2003) high prestige internationally. However, Tito soon turned against Stalin to embark on a path separate from Stalin's and Mao's.
Yugoslavia's "market socialism" devoted to "local control" proves why there is a need for a strong central state and economic cooperation over large distances. The ethnic groups of Yugoslavia did not work together economically and the result was civil war and genocide.
