The Golf War is about to hit southern California! This cutting edge documentary examines a current battle being waged between golf course developers and peasants in the Philippines. BAYAN International - USA, Gabriela, Pesante, the Revolutionary Anti-Imperialist League, and others will be bringing the premiere of The Golf War documentary to the LA area in late May.
The Golf War documentary tells the story of Filipino peasants being violently and illegally kicked off their ancestral land to make way for one of Asia's largest golf resorts. Filmmakers Jen Schradie and Matt DeVries interviewed developers and politicians, as well as armed guerrillas and peasants fighting the development. They even videotaped Tiger Woods promoting golf in the Philippines.
The benefit opening screening and reception will be held Thursday, 13 May 1999, at 7:30 p.m. at the Asian Pacific American Legal Center, 1010 S Flower (corner of Flower and Olympic). This event will include a presentation by the filmmakers, a discussion led by a speaker from BAYAN to discuss the situation in the Philippines and motivate the audience to get involved in solidarity activities, as well as other cultural activities. Tickets are available now for $5 apiece. Send your order in to: The Golf War Screening Organizing Committee, c/o People's CORE, 300 W Cesar Chavez Ave, Suite E, Los Angeles CA 90012.
